Why the bedroom wall cost $4,900
The client wanted a molding wall behind the bed without losing access to their walk-in closet. We carried the panel layout across the door so it appears to disappear into the wall. Because the panels had to align perfectly across both the wall and the door, this required two days of labor instead of one.
Why the stairwell cost $3,450
The wall design is simple: a flat black wall with vertical slats. However, the 17-foot height is the primary factor. Every component was installed and painted using tall extension ladders. We also included a full repaint of the stairwell, including the handrails and baseboards. By using a combination of matte black for the walls and gloss black for the slats and trim, the pattern becomes visible as light moves across it.
What moves the price, from biggest to smallest
Wall size. Labor is the primary cost, and it scales with the square footage. A 25-foot wall will cost more than an 8-foot wall with an identical design.
Height and access. Vaulted walls, two-story rooms, and stairwells require more time and the use of scaffolding or tall ladders.
Layout complexity. A frame inside a frame (double trim) roughly doubles the material and labor of a single layer. Including windows, doors, or outlets within the design requires precise cutting.
Extras. Moving a switch or outlet starts at $250, a niche at $450, LED lighting at $350, and each floating shelf at $350.
Painting beyond the wall. Painting the rest of the room is an additional service starting at $350.
The cost of the material itself is rarely the primary expense. Most of the price reflects the time required to plan the layout, cut every piece with precision, and provide a clean finish. This explains why material prices you see online seem so low: they don't include the labor of a professional, painted wall.
A worked example
If you want board and batten on a wall that is 10 feet wide with an 8-foot ceiling:
10 ft × 8 ft = 80 sq ft
80 sq ft × $18 to $25 = $1,440 to $2,000
This is why our board and batten starts at $1,500. A 12-foot wall with a 9-foot ceiling (108 sq ft) would cost $1,944 to $2,700. If the design requires moving an outlet, add from $250.

Accent walls compared with media walls
An accent wall consists of patterns, trim, or panels on a flat wall. A media wall starts at a higher price point and adds cabinets, shelving, a fireplace, or a TV. For those wanting a fireplace or TV built into the wall, see our custom TV media walls.
